A sunny and unseasonably warm Valentine’s Day afternoon women, women-to-be and anyone who supports them gathered in front of the New Paltz Starbucks to shake a tail feather to demand an end to violence against women.

Rise Sign
Decked out in Red and Black, dancers descended on Platekill Avenue in a defiant show of unity with the One Billion Rising movement of women around the world. This Hudson Valley flash mob also voiced their support for the LGBT community condemning violence against them as well.
Anthems like Bob Marley’s ‘Get up, Stand up’ and Cher’s ‘Woman’s World’ got the crowd warmed up but the actual flash mob had everyone stepping and moving and shaking in unison with the One Billion women around the world.
ONE BILLION WOMEN VIOLATED IS AN ATROCITY
ONE BILLION WOMEN DANCING IS A REVOLUTION
A global strike ,
A communal dance,
A refusal of men and women to continue to participate in the status quo of rape and rape culture,
An act of solidarity, demonstrating to women the commonality of their struggles and their power in numbers
A refusal to accept violence against women and girls as a given
A new time and a new way of being
An AWESOME V-DAY
Hail to the V!

Hi Jenna – looks like it was a lot of fun. Wish I could have been there, but I was at work.
Hope you’re doing well!
